Artist Biographies

Deedee Cheriel

Born in the hippy-town of Eugene, Oregon, Nalini Cheriel rebelled against her Indian father's traditional upbringing, and immersed herself in the art and music cultures that surrounded her. Her iconic images and textures over song-lyrics with graffitied backgrounds reflect the D.I.Y. pop-culture of her tumultuous Oregon upbringing.

Cheriel began at age 16 creating stencils and silkscreens for the Oregon punk scene. She started her own band and record label and passionately designed all the record covers and T-shirts. The artist lived abroad in Honduras and Chile, where she painted with other artists, and sought inspiration from other cultures. Upon returning to the US, armed with a college degree from the University of Oregon, Cheriel returned to playing music in seminal girl-rock bands and painting. Cheriel began spending time in London and India where she sought to explore her Indian roots and her art became more reflective of iconic Hindu and temple imagery. The dualistic nature of her work reflects the clashing of her Indian/ American upbringing.

Now living in Echo Park, CA, the artist further explores opposites, using stencils, silkscreens and other mixed media to re-create the grit of urban walls juxtaposed against nature. The backdrop of the urban landscapes resemble primitive cave drawings. Her crude black line renderings of naked women are outsider art and folk art-inspired. These images are then infused with a vibrant jungle aesthetic, bold-colored flowers, plants, trees and wild animals. Within each painting is a crude balance of anger and beauty, peace and discomfort, urban and Eden, debauchery andspirituality.

Deedee Cheriel has shown in group shows locally at the Dirt, New Image Art Gallery, and Track 16 Gallery alongside Kenny Scharf and Ed Moses. In 2005 Cheriel's work was shown in London at Stall 54, New York at the David Allen Gallery, and a solo show in Los Angeles at Fluxco.

Coming up in May 2006 Deedee will have paintings in the Berlin Mai Art fair, representing new artists from Los Angeles with renowned L.A. artists Sage Vaughn and Camille Rose Garcia.

Jeff Eisenberg

Jeff Eisenberg is a recent transplant to San Francisco, coming here by way of Wisconsin. He has studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, and graduated last year from the San Francisco Art Institute. The son of a research scientist, herself a rock star in the field of Herpes (she also dabbles in Small Pox, Rabies, and likes flu), Jeff has a long history of playing pretend scientist. His drawings are a mixture of inspirations: Science fiction, computer generated architecture, nano and bio-tech imagery, surrealist landscapes, industrial installations, quack theories of reality and sundry other contraptions and quasi-science looking things. When Jeff isn’t playing pretend, he likes to hang out with his lady and talk about animals.

Amanda Lynch

I was born in California. My family moved to Florida when I was one and then to Ohio when I was ten. I spent most of the years I can remember growing up in Fostoria, OH. I come from a family of four daughters. Raised mostly by our mother, we were steeped in femininity. This has been one of the single most important influences on my work. After High School, I attended Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green Ohio where I achieved a BFA in spatial arts. I was a technology major, then a painting major, then a ceramics major. Upon graduating I was invited to San Jose, California to exchange volunteer work at San Jose State University for a studio and facilities. I eventually applied to the MFA program at San Jose State University and am currently pursuing my Masters in Fine Arts there.
