About the Show
San Francisco–based artist Charlie Callahan showcases new work bridging the disconnect between the synthetic and the serene at Receiver Gallery from Feb. 2 to March 21, 2008.
Callahan's videos, drawings and installations of varying scale hinge on hyper–florescent colors adorning the discarded: gnarled barnacles, pockmarked See urchins and crude oil collected off the coast of Crete. Working primarily with foam board and other found recycled materials, Callahan transforms contemporary synthetic creations and actual found objects into larger–than–life natural wonders.
Callahan forces the intersection between nature and the gallery, dragging in the debris and declaring it worthy of adorning whitewashed walls. Callahan's See-inspired pieces are coastal fragments fossilized without a superficial sheen. These are works that cannot be ignored; whether they jump out from the walls overhead or perch at eye level, they beg for your intimate attention and scrutiny.
An opening reception will be held Saturday, Feb 2, from 7 – 10 pm. Refreshments will be served, and the artist will be in attendance.
