About the Show
In The Time It Takes features the Bay Area artists Nancy Chan and Olivia Park. Chan's open and airy figures are surrounded by objects of negative space, contrasted by Park's elements of tight and obsessive mark making.
Nancy's explorations of space in and around the figure are predominantly black and white sumi ink drawings which indicate a sense of discovery. Her use of positive and negative space provide an extension of what is going on in the image and helps drive the viewer into the subjects world. The simplicity of her work tricks the mind to get lost in time.
Titles "like a neurotic symptom" and "how detached" and descriptions such as, "repetitively hand-stitched circle whose circumference is equal to that of my right thumb," provide glimpses of Olivia's relationship with her work and her process. Her tiny repetitive gestures provoke thoughts of anxiety, the obsessive and of the elusive relationship between time and space. In her disclaimers, she makes confessions such as, "I know my mind well enough to call it Unstable/ This will remain a constant/ Thus its constructs/ Time, space, memory/ Are just as vulnerable, laden with ruptures and fiction.
